University requirements for foreign transcripts

Hattiesburg has two universities that publish rules for academic records from outside the United States.

  • University of Southern Mississippi. International transfer applicants from non-US institutions must provide an official course-by-course foreign credential evaluation from a current NACES member service, plus course descriptions in English. The university states that credit may not be posted without those descriptions. Freshman applicants submit copies of high school transcripts or school leaving examination results.
  • William Carey University. All records must be in English before the university issues a Form I-20. Transcripts from each institution attended outside the US must go through a course-by-course credential evaluation by one of the services the university names.

What that means for your translation

A certified translation and a credential evaluation are two different things. The evaluator compares your studies with US coursework, and it usually works from a translation. We supply the translation with a certificate of accuracy; the evaluation comes from the agency. Read the agency’s document instructions first, since each sets its own rules on who may translate and how records must be sent.

Southern Miss lists WES, ECE, GCE, JS&A and SpanTran as commonly used evaluators. William Carey names WES, SpanTran, GCE and ECE, and says the student chooses one and pays its fee. Records these rules cover include diplomas, mark sheets, transcripts and the course descriptions Southern Miss asks transfer students to provide in English.
