Why documents bound for Portugal need an apostille
Portugal is a member of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, so a U.S. document destined for Portuguese authorities doesn’t need to be legalized through an embassy it needs an apostille instead. The apostille is a certificate attached to your document that confirms the signature, seal, or stamp on it is genuine, which is what allows a Portuguese registry office, university, consulate, or government agency to accept it as valid.
In Portugal, apostilles are recognized by the Procuradoria-Geral da República (the Prosecutor General’s Office), which acts as the country’s central authority under the Convention. On the U.S. side, the apostille itself is issued by the Secretary of State in the state where your document was issued, or by the U.S. Department of State for federal documents such as an FBI background check.
