Vital records are issued in Lincoln

Hall County does not issue Nebraska birth or death certificates. Those certified copies, along with marriage and divorce certificates, come from DHHS Vital Records. Order by mail at P.O. Box 95065, Lincoln, NE 68509-5065, or online for birth certificates. The fee is $17 for a birth certificate and $16 for death, marriage or divorce. Vital Records lists a minimum of 15 days of in-office processing for mail and says it does not accept faxed or emailed applications. For a foreign-issued certificate, we translate from the scan you provide.

USCIS paperwork from Grand Island

There is no USCIS office in Grand Island. The Omaha Field Office, 1717 Avenue H, Omaha, NE 68110, covers every Nebraska county and sees visitors by appointment. Most filings are mailed or submitted online, and the translation rule is the same either way: 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) calls for a full English translation that the translator certifies as complete and accurate, with a certification that the translator is competent in both languages. USCIS decides what it accepts.

In court in Hall County

The District Court and County Court at 111 West 1st Street use interpreters from the Nebraska Supreme Court’s interpreter program. The judicial branch says its written exam is offered twice a year at several Nebraska locations and its oral exam twice a year in Omaha and Lincoln; interpreters who pass are classed as certified, provisionally certified or registered. Statewide, Spanish is the language requested most.

An interpreter will not turn your foreign-language documents into exhibits. For a custody order, birth record or contract from another country, bring a written English translation and ask the clerk or your lawyer whether the judge wants the translator’s statement notarized.

The apostille route from Grand Island

A Nebraska apostille is issued only by the Secretary of State’s Notary Division in Lincoln. Most Grand Island requests go by mail: enclose the original document signed by a Nebraska notary or a state or county official, the completed request form naming the destination country, and a check or money order for $10 per document payable to Nebraska Secretary of State. The address is PO Box 95104, Lincoln, NE 68509, and processing takes 3 to 5 business days from receipt. Include a return envelope; without one, the office sends documents back by standard postage. In-person requests at 1201 N Street, Suite 120 are finished the same day.

When a translation has to be notarized for use with a Nebraska apostille, we hire a notary commissioned in Nebraska to notarize the translator’s statement, and we can help prepare the request.
