What state courts say about language

South Dakota’s Unified Judicial System states in its Language Access Plan that all submitted forms must be in English, and it publishes some forms in Spanish. Anyone who needs an interpreter for a hearing is given one at no charge; ask court staff. A written translation of an exhibit, such as a foreign judgment or certificate, is something you arrange yourself, and our certified translations are prepared for that purpose.

The court system’s interpreter listings name Russian, Vietnamese, Arabic and Spanish among the languages it has needed, along with Amharic, Dinka, French, Karen, Kunama, Nepali, Somali, Swahili and Tigrinya.

Transcripts and South Dakota Mines

South Dakota Mines, the engineering and science university in Rapid City, lets international applicants send unofficial international transcripts for the admission review and then requires official transcripts by August 15 for fall or December 15 for spring. Its admissions page says copied documents must be certified by an official school or government agency seal as originals or certified photocopies. The page does not set out a translation rule, so ask the admissions office what it wants for records that are not in English.
