From Memphis to a Tennessee apostille

Tennessee apostilles are issued only in Nashville, by the Secretary of State’s Office of Authentications at 312 Rosa L. Parks Ave, 6th Floor, Nashville, TN 37243. From Memphis the usual choice is mail, addressed to the Business Services Division, ATTN: ATS Section. If you want the documents back by express service, the office asks for a prepaid label showing your own name as both sender and recipient. In-person service is offered on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Central Time for anyone who makes the trip.

There is a local step first. The Secretary of State’s guide says a notarized document must go to the County Clerk where the notary was commissioned for signature certification. For a notary commissioned in Shelby County that is the Shelby County Clerk, whose notary page lists apostille certifications at $5. Then complete request form SS-4504 and include the state fee, which the Tennessee Office of Vital Records gives as $2.00 per document.

When a translation has to be notarized for Tennessee, for example ahead of a Tennessee apostille, we hire a notary commissioned in Tennessee to notarize the translator’s statement. We can also assist with the apostille request, and the receiving country decides whether the original, the translation or both need one.

USCIS paperwork for Memphis applicants

The translation standard is federal: 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) calls for a full English translation certified by the translator as complete and accurate, with a certification that the translator is competent to translate from the foreign language into English. Each of our translations includes that signed statement. Visits to a USCIS field office are by appointment only, and USCIS tells applicants to rely on the address shown on their interview or appointment notice.

University of Memphis and foreign credentials

The University of Memphis requires all international undergraduate applicants transferring from a school abroad to complete a credential evaluation. It accepts course by course evaluations only from agencies that belong to NACES or AICE, and nursing transfers need a CGFNS evaluation. Course descriptions or syllabi for each class must also go to your academic advisor.

Its Graduate School does not require a credential evaluation, though a program may request one later in its review. Evaluation agencies set their own translation rules, so check with the agency you choose before ordering a translation of your transcript or syllabi.
