Translated transcripts for the University of Vermont and Champlain College

Burlington’s two largest campuses publish their own translation rules, and they are not identical.

  • UVM undergraduate admission. The university catalogue says international applicants must submit official original transcripts of all secondary and postsecondary education. If documents are not in English, certified translations are required, and the applicant arranges the translation directly.
  • UVM Graduate College. Its international applicant page says documents not issued in English must be accompanied by a notarized English translation, and asks for a certified literal, word-for-word English translation alongside the transcript in the original language. It encourages applicants to use a NACES or AICES credential evaluation service.
  • UVM transfer credit. Course descriptions and outlines from abroad should be translated into English, and translations must accompany all original documentation.
  • Champlain College. Academic submissions should be translated into English. Transfer applicants with university credentials from abroad need them evaluated by an approved evaluation service.

What the Vermont Judiciary will and will not translate

If you have a hearing in one of the Chittenden divisions, you can ask any Judiciary employee for an interpreter or use the online request form, which is published in 12 languages. The interpreter costs you nothing.

Written documents are a separate matter. Under the Judiciary’s Language Access Operations Manual, the court system translates vital documents that it generates and does not take responsibility for documents produced by other agencies or entities. Check with the clerk of the division handling your case about the translation it expects for a foreign birth certificate, contract or judgment you plan to file.

Burlington vital records and who certifies them

Counties do not issue vital records in Vermont. In Burlington that work belongs to the city’s Clerk/Treasurer’s Office, which, like every Vermont town or city clerk, can issue certified copies of birth, death, marriage and civil union certificates dated January 1, 1909 or later. The Vermont Department of Health sets out the $10 fee per certified copy and limits certified birth and death certificates to family members, legal guardians, certain court-appointed parties and their legal representatives.

Marriage, civil union and divorce records from 2013 and earlier can also be certified by the Vermont State Archives.

Immigration filings from Burlington

The federal translation rule is short. 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) requires that any document containing foreign language submitted to USCIS be accompanied by a full English translation which the translator has certified as complete and accurate, together with the translator’s certification of competence to translate from the foreign language into English.

Our certificate of accuracy is written to that wording. USCIS decides each case itself, and no translator can guarantee how an officer will treat a filing.

Census Reporter’s ACS profile lists Burlington’s population as 44,675 with a median age of 26.8, and 7.1% of residents born abroad. We translate 100 languages. The most requested are Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Urdu, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic and Czech; please ask about any language outside that group.

From Burlington to a Vermont apostille

Burlington has no apostille counter. The Vermont Secretary of State handles every request at 1078 U.S. Route 2, Middlesex, Montpelier, VT 05633-7701, and takes them by mail or in person with form VSARA-35 and a $10 fee per document. Payment is by check or money order made out to the Vermont Secretary of State. Completed apostilles go back by USPS First-Class Mail to a U.S. address without a return postage charge.

An apostille on a translation rests on a Vermont notarization. Where that is needed, we hire a notary commissioned in Vermont to notarize the translator’s statement, so the document qualifies as a Vermont notarized document.
