What Harvard and MIT publish about translated transcripts
Requirements differ by school and program, so read the page for the program you are applying to. These are examples from official admissions pages.
- Harvard Griffin GSAS. Transcripts from international institutions must be in English or be accompanied by a certified English translation, and all translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records.
- Harvard Kennedy School. Transcripts and diplomas in other languages must be translated by the issuing institution or a certified translation service, and the original must be submitted with the translation.
- Harvard Law School LL.M. If the school does not issue transcripts in English, the FAQ tells applicants to take the original transcript in its sealed envelope to a qualified translator.
- MIT Sloan MBA. Applicants must upload both the original transcript and a certified translation.
- MIT Architecture. An unofficial transcript or English translation is uploaded with the application; admitted applicants send official sealed transcripts with English translations.
Translation is not credential evaluation
A certified translation renders the document into English line by line. It does not convert grades or state a US degree equivalent. Some programs ask for an evaluation from a separate credential evaluation service in addition to, or instead of, a translation. We translate; we do not issue evaluations. If a school wants sealed originals handled a particular way, follow its instructions before sending us scans.

Getting a Massachusetts apostille from Cambridge
Apostilles are issued by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, Commissions Section, Room 1719, One Ashburton Place, Boston, MA 02108. The fee is $6.00 per document, by check or money order payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. At the Boston counter up to three documents can be processed the same day; four or more are picked up after 3:00 p.m. the next business day. By mail, include the request form, the destination country, payment and a prepaid return envelope, and allow two to three weeks.
The office certifies original signatures of Massachusetts notaries, city and town clerks, court clerks and registrars. It does not certify out-of-state diplomas or transcripts, which go to the state of origin. For a translation headed abroad, we hire a notary commissioned in Massachusetts to notarize the translator’s statement so that signature can be apostilled.
