Courts that serve Cincinnati

The Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas and the Hamilton County Municipal Court both sit downtown. Municipal civil matters are handled at the courthouse at 1000 Main Street and municipal criminal and traffic matters at the Justice Center, 1000 Sycamore Street.

Hamilton County’s courts provide interpreters for people with limited English proficiency in Municipal and Common Pleas cases, coordinated by a Language Access Coordinator under the county’s Language Access Plan. That service covers interpreting in a case. It does not translate the documents you plan to file, so ask the clerk or your attorney what the court expects for a foreign-language exhibit.

Federal cases are heard at the Potter Stewart U.S. Courthouse, 100 East Fifth Street, home of the Cincinnati seat of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

Translations for USCIS filings

Federal regulation 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) says any document containing foreign language submitted to USCIS must come with a full English translation that the translator has certified as complete and accurate, along with the translator’s certification of competence to translate from that language into English. Our certificate of accuracy is written to carry both statements. We cannot promise how any agency will rule on a filing.

University of Cincinnati and transcript translations

The University of Cincinnati’s international admissions page states that transcripts must be in English and that, if they are not, each document must include a certified English translation. For some countries it asks for a separate line-by-line English translation alongside the official copy. Read the requirement for your country and program before ordering, because individual colleges can add their own rules.

Getting an Ohio apostille from Cincinnati

Apostilles for Ohio documents are issued by the Ohio Secretary of State in Columbus, not by any Cincinnati office. The request is made on Form 8003 and costs $5.00 per document, paid in the exact amount by check, money order or the office’s credit card authorization form. Send it to Ohio Secretary of State, Client Service Center, 180 Civic Center Dr., Columbus, OH 43215-4138 with a self-addressed stamped envelope or a prepaid overnight label. The office says documents are processed within two to three days of receipt and that same-day service requires an appointment.

Form 8003 accepts documents properly notarized by an Ohio notary public and rejects documents notarized outside Ohio. The Secretary of State also says it does not translate documents and that a translation must be notarized before an apostille can be issued. For that reason, when a translation has to be notarized for Ohio, for example for an Ohio apostille, we hire a notary commissioned in Ohio to notarize the translator’s statement.

Federal documents, including FBI background checks, are not handled by the Ohio office.

Languages in Cincinnati

Census Bureau QuickFacts reports that 9.4 percent of Cincinnati residents age 5 and older speak a language other than English at home and that 7.0 percent of residents were born outside the United States (2020 to 2024 estimates).

We translate 100 languages. The ones requested most are Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Urdu, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic and Czech. If yours is not in that list, ask and we will tell you whether we cover it.
