NMSU and translated transcripts
New Mexico State University’s Graduate School states that transcripts that are not in English must be translated. Its international student office says applicants need to obtain official translations from a company or individual recognized as an approved translator, and it names a service the university recommends for combined translation and credit evaluation.
The Graduate School adds that a credential evaluation is not required for admission unless a program says so. Because NMSU sets its own standard for what counts as official, check with admissions that a certified translation from an independent company meets it before ordering.

Birth and death records are not kept by the county. They come from the New Mexico Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics. You can order by mail from New Mexico Vital Records, PO Box 26110, Santa Fe, NM 87502, or online through VitalChek, the state’s partner. The state fee is $10 per certified birth certificate. The bureau says many public health offices in the state can issue birth certificates, so ask the Department of Health which office near Las Cruces does.
Courts in Las Cruces
The Third Judicial District’s language access plan says interpreters are provided at no cost to court customers, witnesses, jurors and other parties. Its fiscal year 2024 interpreter data shows Spanish as the most used language, followed by American Sign Language. The plan also notes that New Mexico Supreme Court forms are available in Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese and Arabic. Documents you bring to a case in another language are a different matter, and court policy leaves their translation to the parties and attorneys.

Translations for USCIS and the MVD
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), USCIS requires a full English translation of any foreign-language document, certified by the translator as complete and accurate, with a statement that the translator is competent to translate into English. Birth certificates, marriage certificates and court records from the country of Mexico are common examples of documents that fall under this rule when they are written in Spanish.
At the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division, documents not in English must be submitted with a written English translation that the translator certifies as full and complete. The MVD says the translator should include a printed name, contact information and a signed statement.

Apostille route from Las Cruces to Santa Fe
New Mexico has one apostille office, the Secretary of State’s Business Services Division at 325 Don Gaspar Ave., Suite 300, Santa Fe, NM 87501. From Las Cruces, most people use the online portal at enterprise.sos.nm.gov or the mail. The fee is $3.00 per document. A mailed request needs the apostille request form, one per document, a check or money order payable to New Mexico Secretary of State, and ideally a prepaid return envelope.
A Dona Ana County Clerk certified copy or a state-issued birth certificate can be apostilled as issued. A translation is different: its accuracy statement has to be notarized by a New Mexico notary first. In that case we hire a notary commissioned in New Mexico to notarize the translator’s statement.
