Chatham County Probate Court asks for translated documents
One local rule is published in plain terms. The Chatham County Probate Court’s marriage license page says that if either applicant presents a legal document in a language other than English, the applicant must attach a translation of the document by a certified translator. That can apply to a foreign divorce decree, death certificate or birth certificate offered as proof.
The court’s marriage license office is in Room 509 of the Chatham County Courthouse, 133 Montgomery Street, Savannah, GA 31401. Applicants who were previously married must bring the final divorce decree, stamped and sealed, or a death certificate.

|---|---|
| Extra certified copies | $18.00 plus a 5 percent convenience fee online; $10 plus $1 per page by mail |
| Payment | Card (5 percent service fee), cash, money order or cashier’s check; no personal checks |

The apostille route from Savannah
Georgia apostilles are issued only by the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) in Atlanta, so from Savannah the usual route is mail or courier. Send the original document, the apostille request form, the name of the destination country, $3.00 per document and a self-addressed stamped envelope or prepaid overnight label to GSCCCA, Attn: Notary Division, 1875 Century Blvd., Ste. 100, Atlanta, GA 30345. The GSCCCA says mail requests are normally processed in one to two business days.
A translation can be apostilled as a notarized document if the translator signs an affidavit before a notary stating knowledge of both languages and that the translation is true and complete. The notarization has to follow Georgia law. For that we hire a Georgia notary to notarize the translator’s statement, so raise the apostille with us before you order and we will help you prepare the request.
Documents for countries outside the Hague Convention go to the Georgia Secretary of State instead, after the notary is certified by the Clerk of Superior Court in the notary’s county. For a Chatham County notary that is the clerk’s office on Oglethorpe Avenue.
