Expedited Missouri FBI Apostille Services
An FBI background check for use abroad needs a federal apostille, and Missouri has no office that can issue one. Apostille Authentications works with Missouri residents by email. You send the FBI result, our Virginia office hand-delivers the request to the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC, and the apostilled check reaches you by FedEx in 10 business days.

Why Jefferson City cannot apostille your FBI background check
Missouri apostilles are issued by the Commissions section of the Secretary of State’s Office, at 600 West Main, Room 322, in Jefferson City. That section certifies Missouri documents: papers notarized by a Missouri notary, birth certificates certified by the Bureau of Vital Records, marriage licenses certified by a county Recorder of Deeds, divorce decrees certified by a Circuit Clerk, and school documents.
Every item on that list traces back to a Missouri official. An FBI Identity History Summary is signed by a federal official, so it belongs to the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications in Washington, DC.
Two points Missouri clients often get wrong:
- A Missouri State Highway Patrol record check is not an FBI check. The Patrol’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division runs two searches. The name-based search, available online through MACHS, returns a possible match and open records only. The fingerprint-based search returns a positive match with complete records, and the Patrol prices it as a state-only search. Neither one is the FBI Identity History Summary that a consulate means when it asks for an FBI or national check.
- Being fingerprinted for the state does not order your FBI report. A fingerprint search requested from the Highway Patrol is a separate request from the one you make to the FBI. For an apostille you need the result the FBI itself issues to you, ordered through the FBI’s eDO site or by mail.
For Missouri birth certificates, marriage licenses or diplomas, see state apostille services.
How it works from Missouri
- Fingerprints where you live. One route is an ink FD-1164 card from a police department, sheriff’s office or fingerprinting vendor. The other is electronic fingerprinting at a participating U.S. Post Office, after you register on the FBI’s eDO site. You then request the FBI Identity History Summary, which costs $18 at the FBI.
- Your FBI result arrives. It is a PDF bearing the FBI watermark and signed by a division official.
- You email it to us. Add a scan of your passport photo page. We review the name and date of birth against the passport before the request is filed.
- Hand-carried to the Department of State. We complete Form DS-4194, and our Herndon, Virginia office delivers the file to the Office of Authentications. No DOJ certification is required for an FBI result.
- Shipped back. FedEx to any address in Missouri, or FedEx or DHL to an address overseas.
Apostille Authentications has no Missouri office and takes no fingerprints in the state. We step in when you have the FBI PDF.

Where we serve Missouri clients
Any address in Missouri. We hear from Kansas City and its neighbors Independence and Lee’s Summit, from St. Louis and St. Charles County towns such as O’Fallon and St. Charles, and from Springfield, Columbia, Joplin and Cape Girardeau. Since the work is done by email and courier, living in the Ozarks instead of near the Capitol makes no difference to the timeline.
Why Missourians need an apostilled FBI check
Common destinations for our Missouri clients include Spain, Italy and Germany for study, residency and citizenship files, and South Korea, Japan and China for teaching and employment visas. Mexico and Panama ask for it with residency and retirement applications, India with employment and family visas, and Australia in some visa cases.
If the receiving country does not work in English, expect to need a translation. Certified translation can be ordered with the apostille. An FBI check has a short useful life for immigration, often 3 to 6 months from its issue date, so schedule fingerprinting with that in mind.

FAQ
Can the Missouri Secretary of State apostille an FBI background check?
No. The Commissions section in Jefferson City certifies Missouri notarized documents and certified Missouri records such as birth certificates, marriage licenses and divorce decrees. An FBI background check is a federal document, apostilled by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC.
How fast is an expedited FBI apostille in Missouri?
10 business days from the day we receive your FBI result. Standard service takes 7–8 weeks.
Can I use a Missouri State Highway Patrol criminal record check instead?
Not when the request is for an FBI check. The Patrol’s name-based search returns open records only, and its fingerprint search is a state search. Either is useful abroad only if the authority asked for a state-level check.
I am in Kansas City or St. Louis. Do I need to travel to Jefferson City?
No. Jefferson City is not involved in an FBI apostille, and we do not have a Missouri office. You email the FBI PDF and get the apostille by FedEx.
What if I have already moved abroad?
Email the FBI PDF from wherever you are. We ship the apostilled document overseas by FedEx or DHL.
