Why Carson City cannot apostille your FBI background check
Nevada apostilles are issued by the Nevada Secretary of State, whose main office is in Carson City. A state apostille confirms the signature of a Nevada official or a Nevada notary public, so it applies to Nevada records and to documents notarized in Nevada.
An FBI Identity History Summary carries the signature of an FBI division official. That is a federal signature, and the office that apostilles it is the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications in Washington, DC. A Nevada apostille cannot stand in for it.
Two errors we see from Nevada clients:
- A Nevada criminal history record is not an FBI check. The Department of Public Safety’s Records, Communications and Compliance Division in Carson City releases Nevada criminal history through its Criminal History Repository, on form DPS-006 with a fingerprint card. The division says these records originate from criminal justice agencies in Nevada and do not include records from other states or the FBI. It also says to allow up to 30 calendar days for processing plus about two weeks for mail. That is a long wait for a document the consulate may not accept.
- Being fingerprinted does not make it a federal check. Both the Nevada record and the FBI check start with fingerprints, so the two are easy to confuse. What matters is where the prints are sent. For a federal apostille, they have to go to the FBI for an Identity History Summary.
For Nevada marriage certificates, birth certificates or notarized documents, see state apostille services.
How it works from Nevada
- Local fingerprinting. Choose an ink FD-1164 card from a police department, sheriff’s office or fingerprinting vendor, or electronic capture at a participating U.S. Post Office after registering on the FBI’s eDO site. You then request the FBI Identity History Summary. The FBI fee is $18.
- FBI response. You receive a PDF that bears the FBI watermark and a division official’s signature.
- Send us the PDF by email. Add a scan of your passport photo page. We match the name and date of birth across both before we file.
- Federal apostille. Form DS-4194 is prepared and our Herndon, Virginia office hand-carries the request to the Office of Authentications. No DOJ certification is required. The FBI result goes straight to the Department of State.
- Shipping. FedEx to your Nevada address, or FedEx or DHL to an address in another country.
We have no office in Nevada and we do not fingerprint clients there. Our service begins with your FBI PDF.

Nevada pricing and turnaround
| Service | Price | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| Expedited FBI apostille (you already have the FBI result) | $390 | 10 business days |
| Standard FBI apostille | $195 | 7–8 weeks |
We count the 10 business days from the date the FBI PDF arrives in our inbox. Hand delivery at the Department of State is what separates expedited from standard service.
Where we serve Nevada clients
Statewide, with no trip required. In Southern Nevada that means Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Mesquite and Pahrump. In the north it means Reno, Sparks and Carson City, and across the rural counties it reaches towns like Elko. Everything moves by email and courier, so the turnaround in Elko matches the turnaround on the Las Vegas Strip.
Why Nevadans need an apostilled FBI check
Common destinations for our Nevada clients include Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia for residency and retirement visas, and the Philippines for family, marriage and long-stay visas. Spain, Portugal and Italy ask for an apostilled FBI check with residency and citizenship applications. South Korea, Japan and China require it for teaching and work visas, and Australia for some employment and migration files.
Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries will normally ask for a translation of both the FBI check and the apostille. Certified translation can be added to your order. Watch the issue date as well, because many authorities accept an FBI check only if it was issued within the last 3 to 6 months.

FAQ
Can the Nevada Secretary of State apostille an FBI background check?
No. A Nevada apostille covers Nevada officials and Nevada notaries. An FBI background check is signed by a federal official and is apostilled by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC.
How fast is an expedited FBI apostille in Nevada?
10 business days from when we receive your FBI result. The standard service takes 7–8 weeks.
Can I use a Nevada Department of Public Safety criminal history instead?
Not if an FBI check was requested. The Records, Communications and Compliance Division states that its records come from Nevada agencies and do not include other states or the FBI.
I live in Las Vegas or Reno. Is there an office I can visit?
Not in Nevada. This is a mail-in service. You email the FBI PDF from home and the apostilled document is delivered by FedEx.
Do I need a Spanish translation for Mexico or Panama?
In most cases yes. Tell us the destination when you order and we can prepare a certified translation with the apostille.
