Expedited New Jersey FBI Apostille Services
You live in New Jersey and a consulate or foreign immigration office wants your FBI background check with an apostille. Trenton does not issue that apostille, and mailing the request to Washington yourself means a long wait. Apostille Authentications receives your FBI result by email, has it hand-carried to the U.S. Department of State, and returns the apostilled document to your New Jersey address by FedEx in 10 business days.

Why Trenton cannot apostille your FBI background check
New Jersey is unusual in that its apostilles do not come from a Secretary of State. They are issued by the Department of the Treasury, Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services, in Trenton. That office issues apostilles and certifications for documents notarized by New Jersey notaries public and for documents certified by certain New Jersey officials, such as Superior Court judges, County Clerks and the State Registrar of Vital Statistics.
An FBI Identity History Summary is signed by a federal official, not by any of those New Jersey signers. The office that apostilles it is the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications in Washington, DC.
Two points that trip up New Jersey clients:
- Searching for the wrong office. Guides written for other states say “Secretary of State”. In New Jersey the apostille office is part of Treasury, and it offers online ordering for New Jersey documents. Neither the name nor the online portal changes the outcome for a federal record: an FBI check has to go to Washington.
- A New Jersey State Police record is a state record. The State Police handle criminal history record requests for New Jersey. A consulate that asks for an FBI, federal or national background check is asking for the FBI Identity History Summary, and a state report does not replace it.
For New Jersey birth certificates, marriage records or notarized documents, see state apostille services.
How it works from New Jersey
- Get fingerprinted near home. Either have an ink FD-1164 card rolled at a police department or fingerprinting vendor, or register on the FBI’s eDO site and give electronic prints at a participating U.S. Post Office. Then request your FBI Identity History Summary. The FBI fee is $18.
- Receive the FBI result. It arrives as a PDF carrying the FBI watermark and the signature of a division official.
- Email us the PDF. We compare the name and date of birth with your passport before anything is filed, so send the passport photo page with it.
- Hand delivery in Washington. We prepare Form DS-4194 and our Herndon, Virginia office hand-carries the request to the Office of Authentications. There is no DOJ certification step. The FBI result goes straight to the Department of State.
- Return shipping. FedEx to your door in New Jersey, or FedEx or DHL directly to an address overseas.
Apostille Authentications has no New Jersey office and does not take fingerprints in the state. Our work starts once you have the FBI PDF.

Where we serve New Jersey clients
Every county, by email and FedEx. Clients write to us from Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Elizabeth in the north, from Edison and New Brunswick in Middlesex County, and from Trenton, Princeton, Toms River and Cherry Hill further south. Because no step requires a visit, someone in Atlantic City is served on the same schedule as someone in Hoboken.
Why New Jersey residents need an apostilled FBI check
Common destinations for our New Jersey clients include Italy, for citizenship by descent and residency files, and Spain and Portugal, for residency and retirement visas. India, South Korea and the Philippines come up with employment, family and long-stay visas. Colombia and Brazil ask for it in residency and marriage cases, and Germany and the Netherlands in some work permit applications.
Where the receiving country does not work in English, a translation is normally expected with the apostilled check. Certified translation can be added to your order. Many authorities accept only an FBI check issued within the past 3 to 6 months, so plan your fingerprinting date around your application date.

FAQ
Can the New Jersey Department of the Treasury apostille an FBI background check?
No. The Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services in Trenton issues apostilles for documents signed by New Jersey notaries and certain New Jersey officials. An FBI background check is a federal document and is apostilled by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC.
How fast is an expedited FBI apostille in New Jersey?
10 business days, counted from the day your FBI result reaches us. The standard service takes 7–8 weeks.
Will a New Jersey State Police criminal history record work instead?
Only when the foreign authority asked for a state-level record. If the instructions say FBI, federal or national, you need the FBI Identity History Summary with a federal apostille.
I live in Newark or Jersey City. Do I have to go to Trenton or Washington?
No. There is nothing to file in Trenton for an FBI apostille and we have no New Jersey office. You email the FBI PDF and the apostille comes back by FedEx.
Can you ship the apostille abroad instead of to New Jersey?
Yes. If you have already left, we send it by FedEx or DHL to your overseas address.
