Expedited New Mexico FBI Apostille Services
If you are leaving New Mexico for a residency visa, a job or a teaching post abroad, the foreign authority will probably ask for an FBI background check with an apostille. That apostille is federal. It is not issued in Santa Fe. Why Santa Fe cannot apostille your FBI background check
In New Mexico, apostilles are issued by the Office of the Secretary of State at 325 Don Gaspar in Santa Fe. The office states that it is the only one in New Mexico authorized to issue an apostille for a notarized document going to a foreign country. It also certifies public records such as birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, school transcripts and court documents, including records certified by County Clerks and the State Registrar of Vital Records.
Those are all New Mexico documents. An FBI Identity History Summary is issued and signed by a federal agency, so the authority that apostilles it is the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications in Washington, DC.
Two things New Mexico clients should know:
- A Department of Public Safety record check is not an FBI check. The New Mexico Department of Public Safety keeps the state’s central repository of criminal history, which holds arrest record information on persons arrested in New Mexico. You request it by mail with a notarized Authorization for Release of Information form. It says nothing about arrests in other states, so it does not satisfy a request for an FBI, federal or national check.
- Notarizing your FBI report does not turn it into a New Mexico document. A notary’s stamp on a copy lets Santa Fe certify the notary’s signature. The underlying record is still federal, and foreign immigration offices generally want the federal apostille on it.
For New Mexico vital records, court papers or notarized documents, see state apostille services.
How it works from New Mexico
- Fingerprints, close to home. Have an ink FD-1164 card taken at a police department, sheriff’s office or fingerprinting vendor. Or sign up on the FBI’s eDO site and submit electronic prints at a participating U.S. Post Office. Either way you request the FBI Identity History Summary and pay the FBI’s $18 fee.
- The FBI sends your result. It is a PDF with the FBI watermark and a division official’s signature.
- Forward the PDF to us by email. Include your passport photo page. We check that the name and date of birth match before filing.
- Washington, DC. We fill in Form DS-4194 and our office in Herndon, Virginia hand-carries the request to the Office of Authentications. FBI results need no DOJ certification first. They go directly to the Department of State.
- Delivery. FedEx to your New Mexico address, or FedEx or DHL to wherever you are abroad.
We have no office in New Mexico and we do not fingerprint anyone in the state. Our service begins when the FBI PDF is in hand.

Where we serve New Mexico clients
The whole state is covered by email and FedEx, which matters in a state where towns are far apart. We work with clients in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, Santa Fe and Los Alamos, Las Cruces in the south, Farmington and Gallup in the northwest, and Roswell, Carlsbad and Hobbs in the southeast. Nobody has to drive to Santa Fe, and the turnaround is the same in Taos as it is in Albuquerque.
Why New Mexicans need an apostilled FBI check
Common destinations for our New Mexico clients include Mexico, for temporary and permanent residency, and Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia for retirement and residency visas. Spain is requested for study, non-lucrative and digital nomad visas. South Korea and Japan require it for teaching visas, and Australia and Germany come up with work and long-stay applications.
Spanish-speaking countries will normally want the apostilled check translated into Spanish. Certified translation can be ordered at the same time. Check the validity window before you get fingerprinted, because many authorities only accept an FBI check issued in the last 3 to 6 months.
More detail on the federal steps is on our FBI apostille services page.
FAQ
Can the New Mexico Secretary of State apostille an FBI background check?
No. The Secretary of State in Santa Fe issues apostilles for New Mexico notarized documents and certified New Mexico public records. An FBI background check is federal and must be apostilled by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC.
How fast is an expedited FBI apostille in New Mexico?
10 business days from the day we receive your FBI result by email. Standard service takes 7–8 weeks.
Is a New Mexico Department of Public Safety background check enough?
Not if the request is for an FBI check. The DPS repository holds arrest record information for arrests made in New Mexico. Use it only where the foreign authority specifically asks for a state check.
I am in Albuquerque or Las Cruces. Do I need to travel to Santa Fe?
No. Santa Fe plays no part in an FBI apostille, and we have no New Mexico office to visit. Everything is done by email and FedEx.
Do I need a Spanish translation for Mexico?
In most cases, yes. Tell us the destination when you order and we can prepare a certified translation along with the apostille.
