Hillsborough County marriage licenses: notarized translation required
The Hillsborough County Clerk states in its marriage license FAQ: “Documents submitted in any language other than English are required to have a notarized English translation.” If you are bringing a foreign document to the Clerk for a marriage license, plan on a translation with a notarized translator’s statement.
We can have the translator’s statement notarized when you order. When a Florida notarization is required, we hire a Florida notary to complete it. Confirm the Clerk’s marriage license requirement with its staff before you order.

Tampa courts and interpreters
Tampa’s state trial courts are part of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, which covers Hillsborough County. Its Court Interpreter Center is in the Courthouse Annex at 419 N. Pierce Street, Suite 107, Tampa, FL 33602, phone (813) 272-5947. Staff interpreters handle Spanish and freelance interpreters cover more than 20 other languages and dialects.
The center supplies interpreters for due process hearings such as criminal arraignments and trials, domestic violence injunctions, dependency, child support enforcement and juvenile delinquency. In family law and civil cases the parties must arrange a private interpreter themselves. The center’s page does not set out a rule for translated exhibits, so check with the division or your attorney.
Federal cases are heard in the Tampa Division of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, at the Sam M. Gibbons United States Courthouse, 801 North Florida Avenue, Tampa, FL 33602.
Immigration paperwork and university transcripts
For anything filed with USCIS, 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) requires a full English translation of every foreign language document, certified by the translator as complete and accurate, along with the translator’s certification of competence in both languages. Our certificate of accuracy is written to that standard, though the decision to accept a document always belongs to USCIS.
The University of South Florida tells international applicants: “If you submit international transcripts and they are not issued in English, you must also include certified English translations.” Its country guidelines call for a certified word-for-word English translation of final high school documents. Ask the admissions office whether it has rules on who may translate.
Language in Tampa by the numbers
According to U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 28.3% of Tampa residents age 5 and older speak a language other than English at home, and 19.4% of the city’s residents were born outside the United States (2020 to 2024). The same source puts the Hispanic or Latino share of the population at 26.2%.
The apostille route from Tampa to Tallahassee
An apostille for a Florida document comes from one place: the Florida Department of State, Division of Corporations, in Tallahassee. There is no apostille counter in Tampa.
Send the Department’s Apostille and Notarial Certificate Request Form with your document and a self-addressed stamped envelope or prepaid airbill to 2415 N. Monroe Street, Suite 810, Tallahassee, FL 32303. The fee is $10 per document, or $20 for a document certified by a Clerk of Court because a $10 certificate of incumbency is added. Walk-in service at the same address runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and the Department says most requests may be completed while you wait.
Photocopies are refused. Notarized documents need a full notarial statement with the notary’s original signature, stamp and seal, and the Department notes that the person translating a document cannot be the person who notarizes it. For a birth or death record, the Department of Health directs you to order the certification from the Bureau of Vital Statistics with its apostille application first.
