Translations for USCIS
Federal regulation 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) requires any document containing foreign language submitted to USCIS to be accompanied by a full English translation that the translator has certified as complete and accurate, with the translator’s certification of competence to translate from the foreign language into English. Our certificate of accuracy is written to cover those points. Whether a filing is accepted is decided by USCIS.
Courts and interpreters in Pinellas County
A written translation and a court interpreter are different things. The Sixth Judicial Circuit provides spoken language interpreters for court appearances and asks you to submit its Spoken Language Court Interpreter Request Form at least seven business days before the hearing. Questions go to 727-464-4062.
The court’s interpreter page does not describe translating a party’s exhibits. If you plan to file a foreign-language document in a family or civil case, ask the judge’s office or your attorney what form of translation is expected before you order.
Colleges and transcripts
A credential evaluation is separate from a translation. Check with the evaluator which translation it accepts.
- University of South Florida. USF, which has a St. Petersburg campus, states that international transcripts not issued in English must include certified English translations, and describes them as word-for-word.
- St. Petersburg College. SPC requires an official evaluation of education earned outside the U.S. by a current NACES member, and says financial documents must be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation.
Getting a Florida apostille from St. Petersburg
Apostilles for Florida documents are issued only by the Florida Department of State, Division of Corporations, in Tallahassee. There is no apostille counter in Pinellas County, so most people mail the request.
The fee is $10.00 per document, or $20.00 for a document certified by a Florida Clerk of the Court, such as a certified copy from the Pinellas clerk. Payment is by check or money order payable to the Florida Department of State. Cash and credit cards are not accepted.
- Address. Apostille Section, The Centre of Tallahassee, 2415 N. Monroe Street, Suite 810, Tallahassee, FL 32303. Walk-in service runs Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the office says most requests can be completed while you wait.
- What to send. The Apostille and Notarial Certificate Request Form, the original document, the fee, and a self-addressed stamped envelope or prepaid airbill. Photocopies are not accepted.
- Notarized translations. The Department says the person translating a document cannot be the person who notarizes it. It does not translate documents and does not offer expedited service.
- Vital records. The Florida Department of Health describes a two-step process: order the certificate from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, then send it to the Department of State.
