The apostille route from Fort Wayne

Indiana apostilles are issued in Indianapolis, not in Allen County. From Fort Wayne most people mail their documents to the Indiana Secretary of State, Authentications, 302 W. Washington Street, Room E-018, Indianapolis, IN 46204, with the Authentication Request Form, a check or money order and a self-addressed stamped envelope. The office says mail requests are normally processed in 1 to 2 business days from receipt. You can also go in person: up to 10 documents are handled while you wait with an appointment, or 5 without.

The fee is $2.00 per authentication, with no charge for birth and death certificates, adoption documents, and student transcripts and diplomas. An Allen County marriage license must first be certified by the current clerk of the circuit court. The Secretary of State requires a translation to be notarized before it is authenticated, and for that we hire a notary commissioned in Indiana to notarize the translator’s statement.

Fort Wayne courts and interpreters

The Allen Circuit Court and Allen Superior Court sit at the Allen County Courthouse, 715 S. Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46802. The county also lists Misdemeanor and Traffic Court at the Bud Meeks Justice Center, 101 E. Superior St., and Small Claims at 1 W. Superior St. The Fort Wayne division of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana is at 1300 S. Harrison St., Fort Wayne, IN 46802.

Allen Superior Court says it provides multilingual and American Sign Language interpretation at no cost in criminal, domestic relations, CHINS and protective order cases, by telephone when no one is available in person. Its language access page covers interpreters and does not address translated documents, so ask the court or your attorney how a translated exhibit should be presented.

Immigration, BMV and school paperwork

  • USCIS. 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) requires a full English translation of any foreign-language document, certified by the translator as complete and accurate, with a statement of the translator’s competence.
  • Indiana BMV. The Driver’s Manual calls for a translation typed on a separate page on the letterhead of a government entity, accredited educational institution or translation agency, with a signed accuracy and competence statement saying the document was not translated for a family member, friend or business associate.
  • Purdue University Fort Wayne. For transfer credit from institutions outside the United States without U.S. regional accreditation, the Office of International Education prepares the credential evaluation. Its admission requirements page does not spell out a translation rule, so ask that office before ordering.
  • Notaries. Under Indiana Code 33-42-13-3, a non-attorney notary may not use the term notario publico and may not give immigration advice.
