Apostille Service in Mission, Texas
Apostille Request Form
If you live in Mission and a school, notary or government office overseas has asked for an “apostille,” it wants proof that the signature on your Texas document is genuine. Only the Texas Secretary of State issues that certificate for Texas records.
Apostille Authentications takes care of the filing for you. We are not located in Mission; our clients here mail or courier their documents to us, we confirm they meet state requirements, and we submit them to Austin on their behalf.
Mission's Place on the Western Edge of the Valley
Mission was founded in 1907 and sits in southern Hidalgo County. Its link to Mexico became more direct when the Anzalduas International Bridge opened on 15 December 2009, connecting the western side of Mission with Reynosa, Tamaulipas (bridge overview; Texas Tribune). The crossing is built for passenger vehicles, with a SENTRI lane for enrolled travelers.
The city is also known for citrus. According to the City of Mission, the first Texas Citrus Fiesta was held here in December 1932 to promote the Valley’s winter grapefruit and orange crop, with John H. Shary presiding, and the fiesta’s main events still take place in Mission.
That mix of commuting families and agricultural roots shows up in the documents people bring us: personal records for relatives in Mexico, land and inheritance papers, and school records for young adults moving abroad.
Common Documents From Mission Households
- Birth certificates for a child’s Mexican nationality registration, passport application or school enrollment abroad
- Marriage records for couples recording their Texas marriage in Mexico
- Death certificates needed to settle an estate or close accounts outside the U.S.
- Divorce decrees so a person can remarry in another country
- Notarized powers of attorney that let a relative sign on your behalf in Reynosa or Monterrey
- Diplomas and transcripts for jobs or graduate programs overseas
Mexico has accepted apostilles since 14 August 1995, when its accession to the Hague Convention entered into force (HCCH status table). For countries outside the Convention, such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar or Kuwait, the document must instead be legalized through that country’s embassy. Our country list can help you check.
A few situations trip people up. If a parent was born in Mission but the child was born in Houston, each birth certificate comes from a different office, and both can still be apostilled in Austin because both are Texas records. If a document was issued by another state, however, that state has to apostille it; Texas cannot. And if you hold a document that was notarized years ago, check that the notary’s commission was active on the date of signing, because the state checks it against its records.
Families who own land or a house in Mexico often need more than one of these documents at the same time, such as a death certificate together with a notarized power of attorney for the heir handling the sale. Sending them together keeps the set consistent.
City Hall or the County Clerk? Finding the Right Certified Copy
Mission has its own vital statistics office, and Hidalgo County keeps records too. Use this table to decide where to order.
| Office | What it provides | How to reach it |
|---|---|---|
| City of Mission, City Secretary – Vital Statistics | Certified birth certificates for people born in Mission; Texas birth abstracts; death certificates | Next to the front lobby of City Hall; (956) 580-8721 or (956) 580-8650 |
| Hidalgo County Clerk | Birth, death and marriage records; marriage licenses | 100 N. Closner, Edinburg, TX 78539; (956) 318-2100; Mon-Fri 8-5 |
| Hidalgo County District Clerk | Divorce decrees and other district court records | 100 N. Closner, 1st Floor, Edinburg; (956) 318-2200 |
| Texas Vital Statistics (DSHS) | Birth and death records from any Texas county | Order online or by mail; select “Apostille” as the purpose |
Per the City of Mission, mailed requests need an application, a copy of valid ID and a money order. The city lists the full-size certified birth certificate and the shorter abstract at the same price. When a foreign office will review the record closely, the full-size certified version is usually the safer choice. County details come from the Hidalgo County Clerk and the District Clerk; also see the DSHS local office list.
Mission CISD, Sharyland and College Records
Most of Mission is in Mission Consolidated ISD, which runs Mission High School and Veterans Memorial High School, while parts of the city fall in Sharyland ISD and La Joya ISD (city profile). South Texas College’s main Pecan Campus is in neighboring McAllen (STC campuses).
Texas does not apostille a diploma simply because a school printed it. The state authenticates the signature of a notary or public official, so the usual approach is for a registrar or school official to sign a statement in front of a Texas notary. Ask the school how it handles requests for notarized records, then send the result to us for review.

Before You Mail: A Short Checklist
- Confirm the country and the office that will receive the document.
- Make sure each vital record is a certified copy, not a photocopy or hospital keepsake.
- Check that any notarized page shows the notary’s seal, signature and commission expiration.
- Ask whether the receiving office needs a Spanish translation; our translation team can help.
- Include a return address and the best phone number to reach you.
Questions From Mission Residents
Can a birth certificate from Mission City Hall be apostilled?
Yes. The City of Mission Vital Statistics office issues certified birth certificates for people born in Mission, and a certified copy signed by the local registrar is accepted by the Texas Secretary of State for an apostille.
Should I order the full certified birth certificate or the abstract?
The City of Mission charges the same for both. Many foreign offices expect the full certified version, so ask the receiving office before ordering the abstract.
I married in Mission. Who holds the marriage record?
Marriage records for Mission residents are kept by the Hidalgo County Clerk at 100 N. Closner in Edinburg. Request a certified copy there, then send it for the apostille.
Will an apostille work for papers going to Reynosa through the Anzalduas crossing?
For Mexico, yes. Mexico is a Hague Apostille Convention country, so a Texas apostille is the authentication its offices accept. A Spanish translation may also be requested.
Is there an apostille office in Mission?
No. Texas apostilles come only from the Secretary of State in Austin, and Apostille Authentications serves Mission clients by mail and courier rather than from a local office.
