Apostille Service in Georgetown, Texas

Apostille Request Form

Georgetown has a practical edge when it comes to apostilles: as the Williamson County seat, it is where the county’s vital records counter and its courts are located. If your birth, marriage or divorce happened anywhere in Williamson County, the certified copy you need is issued right here in town.

What Georgetown does not have is the office that actually attaches an apostille. That is the Texas Secretary of State in Austin. Apostille Authentications bridges the gap by mail and courier: you collect the record locally, send it to us, and we prepare and file the state request. We have no Georgetown office, so everything runs remotely. Below is a guide to the local offices, the documents Georgetown residents and employers most often need, and what our apostille service in Georgetown, Texas costs.

Records Issued Here in the County Seat

Williamson County keeps its recording, vital records and court functions in two Georgetown buildings. Knowing which one to contact saves a wasted trip.

Divorce decrees, district court ordersWilliamson County District ClerkP.O. Box 24, Georgetown, TX 78626; 512-943-1212

A few details from the county’s own pages are worth noting:

  • The County Clerk’s mailing address is a post office box in Jarrell (P.O. Box 647, Jarrell, TX 76537), not a Georgetown street address.
  • The District Clerk processes family records requests electronically. Certified copies cannot be emailed; they are mailed or picked up. Personal checks are not accepted.
  • Texas Vital Statistics (DSHS) is an alternative source for birth and death certificates. When ordering from the state, give Apostille as the reason.

Always ask for a certified copy. A plain photocopy, or a souvenir-style certificate, cannot receive an apostille.

Georgetown retirees and newcomers are sometimes surprised that a record from decades ago is still easy to obtain. Older Williamson County records are kept by the same clerk’s office, and the County Clerk’s Research Library in the Administration Building can help locate them. Allow extra time for older files before you plan any travel or filing deadline abroad.

Southwestern University Diplomas and Transcripts

Southwestern University, the private liberal arts university based in Georgetown, sends many graduates abroad for graduate school, teaching jobs and fellowships. Foreign universities and employers commonly ask for an apostilled diploma, an apostilled transcript, or both.

Here is how a Southwestern record becomes eligible:

  1. Request an official copy or a registrar’s certification from the university.
  2. Have the registrar (or another authorized official) sign it before a Texas notary, or obtain a notarized true-copy statement.
  3. Send the notarized document to us. Texas authenticates the notary’s commission, which is what the apostille certifies.

Georgetown ISD transcripts and diplomas work the same way. Students from the district who move overseas with family, or apply to universities abroad, can follow this path. Parts of the city are served by Leander ISD instead, so request records from whichever district you attended.

Recent graduates should check the deadline set by the foreign program, since registrar requests, notarization and state processing all take time.

Georgetown Businesses Working Overseas

The city’s economic development office lists manufacturers and technology firms among Georgetown’s major employers, including Airborn, CelLink Corporation, Chatsworth Products, GAF Energy, Loram Technologies, ZT Systems and TASUS Texas Corporation, alongside St. David’s Georgetown Hospital and Southwestern University. Companies like these may need apostilles when they:

  • Register a subsidiary or branch in another country
  • Prove their legal existence to a foreign bank or customer with a Texas certificate of status
  • Appoint a foreign agent through a notarized power of attorney
  • Submit notarized commercial invoices or declarations requested by a buyer abroad

Healthcare professionals at the city’s hospitals also use our service to apostille license verifications and degrees for work abroad. If the receiving country gives you a list of required documents, share it so we can confirm whether each one is eligible as is.

One practical tip for Georgetown companies: order business certificates directly from the Texas Secretary of State whenever possible. A certificate issued by that office already carries an official signature, so it can be apostilled without a notary. Privately prepared papers, such as a supplier declaration or a letter from your CEO, still need to be signed in front of a Texas notary first.

Ordering Your Apostille From Georgetown

Austin’s Capitol complex is close enough for a day trip, and the Authentications Unit at 400 West 15th Street does serve the public in person: walk-ins Monday and Friday, appointments Tuesday through Thursday, usually finished the same day. If you would rather not take time off, here is how ordering with us works:

  • Email or call us first with photos of your documents. We flag problems such as an expired notary stamp or a missing certificate before you mail them.
  • Mail the originals using a tracked service.
  • We prepare Form 2102, the state’s apostille request, and pay the state fee on your behalf.
  • The Secretary of State processes the request. By mail, the state allows up to two weeks after receipt. We do not set or guarantee that timeline.
  • We return the apostilled documents to you or ship them to the recipient abroad.

Fees and the Documents Texas Cannot Apostille

Each document costs $195 in service fees plus the $15 fee charged by the Texas Secretary of State. Shipping is separate. See our pricing for details.

Not every document goes through Austin:

  • FBI background checks are federal records and are apostilled by the U.S. Department of State. Our FBI apostille page explains that process.
  • Documents for non-Hague countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait, need embassy legalization rather than an apostille.
  • Documents issued in another state must be apostilled by that state’s authority, even if you now live in Georgetown.

Not sure which applies? Our list of countries that accept apostilles is a good starting point.

Questions From Georgetown Clients

Can I pick up my Williamson County birth certificate in Georgetown and send it straight to you?

Yes. Request a certified copy at the County Clerk’s Administration Building on Texas Trail, then mail it to us unopened and unaltered. Do not laminate or remove any attachments.

My divorce was finalized at the Williamson County Justice Center. Where do I get the decree?

Certified copies of district court divorce decrees come from the Williamson County District Clerk (512-943-1212). Ask for a certified copy, which the clerk will mail or hold for pickup.

Does a Southwestern University diploma need to be notarized?

In most cases, yes. The registrar signs a certification or copy before a notary, and the Texas Secretary of State apostilles that notarized document.

Is the apostille issued by Williamson County?

No. County offices issue certified records, but only the Texas Secretary of State in Austin issues apostilles for Texas documents.

I live in Georgetown but was born in another Texas county. Can I still get my certificate locally?

The Williamson County Clerk issues records for events in Williamson County. For a birth elsewhere in Texas, order a certified copy from Texas Vital Statistics or from the county where you were born, and choose Apostille as the reason.
