Apostille Service in Abilene, Texas

Apostille Request Form

Abilene combines a major Air Force installation with three private universities, so it produces more internationally bound paperwork than its size might suggest. Military orders, study abroad and overseas jobs all tend to start with the same request: get this Texas document apostilled. Apostille Authentications helps people throughout Abilene and the Big Country do that by mail.

Our company does not have an Abilene location. You mail or courier the documents to us, and we prepare and submit them to the Texas Secretary of State, then return them to you once the apostille is attached.

Dyess Air Force Base and Overseas Assignments

Dyess Air Force Base, on the west side of the city, is Abilene’s top employer, with 8,864 employees in the city’s 2024 report. It is home to the 7th Bomb Wing, which the base describes as the Air Force’s premier operational B-1B Lancer unit, and the 317th Airlift Wing, which operates under Air Mobility Command.

When an assignment takes a Dyess household abroad, or a service member marries a foreign national, these Texas documents come up often:

  • Taylor County marriage records
  • Birth certificates for children born in Abilene
  • Divorce decrees needed to prove eligibility to remarry abroad
  • A spouse’s diploma or professional license for overseas employment

Records issued by the military or another federal agency are not Texas documents and are apostilled by the U.S. Department of State instead. See our authentication service overview for how federal documents are handled.

The civilian side of Abilene’s workforce adds its own requests. Besides Dyess, the city’s 2024 list of major employers includes Hendrick Health System, Abilene ISD, the Abilene State Supported Living Center, Abilene Christian University and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Clinicians applying for foreign licenses, teachers taking jobs at international schools and office staff transferring abroad typically need notarized employment letters, license verifications or degree records certified before they leave.

Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons, McMurry and Other Local Schools

Few Texas cities this size have as many campuses. Abilene Christian University (founded 1906), Hardin-Simmons University (1891) and McMurry University (1923) are joined by Cisco College, Texas State Technical College West Texas, and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s Abilene campus. Abilene ISD and Wylie ISD serve most local students at the K-12 level.

Typical education documents we see from these schools include diplomas for graduate study or teaching abroad, transcripts for foreign credential evaluations, and nursing or pharmacy records for licensing outside the U.S. Each must be notarized by a Texas notary before the apostille, and some countries also want a certified translation, which our translation team can provide.

North Abilene and the Jones County Line

Abilene is the Taylor County seat, but its city limits stretch north into Jones County, where some neighborhoods fall in the Clyde and Hawley school districts. If your marriage license or court case was filed in Jones County, the certified copy comes from Jones County’s clerks rather than the offices on Oak Street. That difference affects only where you order; the Texas Secretary of State apostilles records from every county in the same way.

Not sure which county filed your record? The license or decree itself usually names the issuing county near the clerk’s signature or seal. If you only have an old photocopy, call the Taylor County offices first; staff can tell you whether the record is in their index. When records from both counties are needed, you can send them to us together, and we will submit them in one request to Austin.

Avoiding the Most Common Rejections

Most delays come from a handful of fixable problems:

  • Photocopies instead of certified copies. The state verifies an official’s signature and seal, which a photocopy does not carry.
  • Incomplete notarizations. A missing notary seal, expired commission or wrong certificate wording will stop a diploma or affidavit.
  • Wrong authority. An FBI background check belongs with the U.S. Department of State, not Texas; our FBI apostille page explains that route. A document from another state must go to that state.
  • Wrong process for the country. Destinations outside the Hague Convention, including the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, need embassy legalization. Our country list shows which applies.

Mailing From the Big Country Instead of Driving to Austin

A one-stamp errand in the capital can eat most of a day from Abilene. Using us, the steps are: gather certified or notarized documents, confirm the destination with us, ship them in, and let us complete Form 2102 and submit everything to the Authentications Unit at 400 West 15th Street, Austin, TX 78701.

Texas charges $15 for each apostille. Our service adds $195 per document. On the state side, a mailed request can take up to two weeks after it arrives, while counter service is same day, with walk-ins on Monday and Friday and appointments in the middle of the week, Tuesday through Thursday. Because the state sets the pace, we do not promise our own turnaround. Visit our pricing page for details.

Abilene and Taylor County Apostille FAQ

Which office has my Abilene birth certificate, the county or the health district?

Both may. The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District files births that occurred within Abilene city limits, and the Taylor County Clerk also issues certified birth certificates. Either certified copy can be apostilled, so choose whichever is more convenient.

We are being reassigned from Dyess to a base overseas. How early should we start?

As soon as you know the destination. Ordering certified copies, getting any notarizations, and the state's own processing all take time, and mailed requests can sit with the Secretary of State for up to two weeks after arrival. Starting early leaves room to fix problems.

Can I mail a personal check to the Taylor County Clerk for a birth certificate?

No. The County Clerk's mail-in form asks for a cashier's check or money order and says it does not accept personal or business checks. Certified copies are $23 each, and the form requires a notarized proof of identification.

Do Abilene Christian or Hardin-Simmons diplomas need to be notarized first?

Yes. Diplomas and transcripts from any college are private documents in Texas, so a Texas notary must notarize them before the Secretary of State can attach an apostille. Your registrar's office is a good place to ask about notarized copies.

Where would I get a certified copy of a Taylor County divorce decree?

Contact the Taylor County District Clerk at 300 Oak Street, Suite 400, Abilene, TX 79602, phone (325) 674-1316, and request a certified copy of the final decree.
